Signs your septic system needs attention
Most septic problems give warning before they become emergencies. Calling early usually means a smaller repair instead of a full replacement. Watch for:
- Slow drains throughout the house, or gurgling in the pipes
- Sewage backing up into a basement drain, tub or toilet
- Wet, spongy or unusually green ground over the tank or drain field
- Sewage odours in the yard or inside the house
- A high-water alarm sounding on a system with a pump

How much does a new septic system cost in New Brunswick?
It depends mostly on your soil, slope, access and the type of system the lot needs. A straightforward gravity trench system on good soil sits at the lower end, while a raised mound with imported sand, a pump chamber or engineering costs considerably more. Most new systems in southeastern New Brunswick land between $15,000 and $30,000 installed, and difficult sites can cost more. How long does a septic system last?
Most septic systems last 15 to 40 years, and drain fields commonly last 20 to 30 years with good care. Regular pumping, sensible water use, and keeping vehicles, trees and roof water away from the field all add years. If your system is getting older, knowing its age lets you plan and budget instead of reacting to a failure. More in warning signs.
Can I replace just the septic tank and keep my drain field?
Often, yes. If the field is still draining properly and the problem is a cracked, collapsed or undersized tank, we can replace the tank and reconnect it to your existing field. It still needs an approval and a licensed installer. We check the field first, so you do not put a new tank on a failing field. See septic tank replacement.
How do I know if my septic pump has failed?
Common signs are a high-water alarm, drains slowing or backing up even though the tank was pumped recently, a pump that runs constantly or never starts, or a tripped breaker on the septic pump circuit. Can I install or repair my own septic system?
No. In New Brunswick, anyone installing, constructing, repairing or replacing an on-site sewage disposal system, or any part of it, must be licensed and hold an approval. It is not a do-it-yourself project. See septic rules and approvals.
How often should my septic tank be pumped?
New Brunswick septic service providers commonly recommend every 2 to 3 years for a family of four with a typical tank, and general Canadian guidance is every 3 to 5 years. Household size, water use and a garbage grinder all change that number. More in maintenance and pumping.
How long does a septic approval take?
Up to seven business days from the time a complete application is received. Your installer prepares and submits the application, so the most important step is getting the site evaluated and the paperwork complete. See permits and fees.
